What Interior Designers Really Do: More Than Just Decorating

When many people think about hiring an interior designer, they often imagine someone choosing beautiful furniture, selecting paint colors, or styling a finished space. While those elements are certainly part of the process, the reality is that interior design involves far more behind the scenes work than most people realize.

At Two Cats Interiors, much of my time is spent helping guide projects from the very first ideas all the way through the final installation. Along the way there are countless details, decisions, and logistics that help bring everything together successfully.

Interior design is not just about creating something beautiful — it’s about coordinating an entire process so the finished result feels thoughtful, functional, and well executed.

Planning the project before any materials are selected or furniture is ordered, involves a significant amount of time. This includes understanding how the client lives in their home, evaluating the existing space, discussing goals and priorities, and identifying what changes would improve the space.

At Two Cats Interiors, these early conversations are incredibly important because they help shape the direction of the entire design. A thoughtful plan at the beginning helps prevent confusion and unexpected challenges later.

Hours of Research and Sourcing

Another part of the design process that many people never see is the amount of sourcing involved. Designers spend many hours researching materials, products, and furnishings that will work beautifully together while also fitting within the client’s budget and overall vision.

This can include tile, cabinetry, lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, furniture, textiles, and flooring materials. The goal is to present clients with curated options that feel cohesive rather than overwhelming.

Coordinating With Contractors and Vendors

For remodeling projects, designers often work closely with contractors and vendors to ensure the design plan can be executed successfully. This may include reviewing plans and layouts, answering questions during construction, coordinating material selections, and helping resolve design related decisions as the project moves forward. Collaboration with contractors is an important part of making sure the finished space reflects the original design vision.

Managing Logistics

Design projects also involve a significant amount of logistical coordination. Materials and furnishings must be ordered, tracked, delivered, and sometimes shipped across long distances. For island locations this can add additional complexity. Part of the role of Two Cats Interiors is helping manage these details so clients do not have to navigate the process alone.

Helping Clients Make Confident Decisions

Design projects involve many decisions, and it is easy for homeowners to feel overwhelmed by the number of options available. Working with a designer provides guidance throughout that process so clients can refine ideas and make decisions that align with their goals and personal style.

Keeping the Project Aligned With the Budget

Budget planning is another important part of the design process. Understanding a client’s “do not exceed” number helps guide decisions about materials, fixtures, furnishings, and other design elements so the project remains both beautiful and financially comfortable.

Bringing Everything Together

When all of these pieces come together — planning, sourcing, coordination, logistics, and collaboration — the result is a space that feels carefully considered and thoughtfully designed. Interior design is about far more than decorating a room.

It is about guiding a process that transforms ideas into spaces that truly support the way people live. Two Cats Interiors enjoys helping homeowners navigate that process so their projects feel organized, collaborative, and ultimately rewarding.
